The 4th Gerrards Cross International Veterans
Grass Court Tournament was held at Bull Lane 8th-11th September with a
record 109 entries.
Competitors came from as far away as Mexico,
Italy, Sweden, France and Scotland as well as all parts of England to
help make it a successful and memorable event.
The mens 35's singles was won by Stephen Savage
from Ashford Tennis Club who beat 2 Bull Lane members, David
Sellars and Ian Jackson on the way to the final where his opponent David
King from David Lloyd Club, Bushey had to retire injured after only a
few games.
David and Ian also got to the final of the mens
35 doubles where they were only narrowly beaten in a championship
tiebreak 10-8. by Martin Lewis and Simon Syed.
Alessandro Cesario from Rome won the mens 45 singles final against Frenchman Luc Pajot.
The mens 55 singles final was an all Swedish
affair with Mats Eurenius beating last years winner Goran Sundh in 3
close fought sets.
The mens 65 singles final was an all Buckinghamshire tussle with Keith Bland, currently UK's no1, beating Bev Wilson.
Keith Bland with his partner Keith Haig from
Scotland went on to win the mens 55 doubles against Barrie Gilbert
and Arun Vethakkan.
There was a good ladies entry this year in both the 40 and 50 age groups.
Kim Reed beat Delphine Rive from Harpenden in
the final of the 40 singles before losing in the final of the 50 singles
to Jo Francis Pope.
Ladies 40 doubles was won by Delphine Rive and
Dianne Taylor from Kircaldy and the ladies 50 doubles was won by Jane
Oxford-Whitefield and Jill Paice.
We look forward to hosting this event again next year when we hope that even more local players from the county will take part.
